Word counter

Live word, character, sentence and paragraph count as you type.

Most used words

The most frequent words appear here once you add text.

Paste or type your text and the counter updates as you go: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and how long the text takes to read or say aloud. It also lists the words you use most, so you can spot repetition before an editor does. Use it to check an essay against a word limit, keep a bio under a character cap, size an abstract or a job application, or estimate how long a script will run. The text stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so drafts, contracts and private notes are as safe here as in a text editor. Your last input is kept on this device only, and Clear removes it.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your text into the box. The counts update as you type.
  2. Read the numbers in the row below: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and speaking time.
  3. Click a number to copy it, or use Copy to copy all the counts at once.
  4. Check the most used words at the bottom to spot repetition.
  5. Use Clear to empty the box and forget the saved text.

What it handles

  • Counts words in any language, including Chinese and Japanese, where each character counts as a word.
  • Treats an emoji or a letter with an accent mark as one character, not several.
  • Keeps contractions and hyphenated words together: "don't" and "well-known" are one word each.
  • Does not split sentences on decimals such as 3.14 or version numbers such as 1.2.3.
  • Reading time uses 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute.
  • Handles texts of several megabytes without freezing the page.

FAQ

Does the word counter count spaces?

Both numbers are shown. "Characters" includes every space, line break and tab, which is what most character limits mean. "Characters without spaces" leaves out all whitespace. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, even when they are made of several code points.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser, on your device. The page loads once and then works without a connection. Nothing is logged or stored on a server. The only copy kept is in your browser's local storage, so you can come back to the text on this device, and Clear removes it.

Is there a limit on the amount of text?

There is no fixed limit. Texts of a few megabytes count in well under a second on a modern phone or laptop; above that the counter waits briefly after you stop typing before it updates. The saved copy in your browser is limited to 200 KB, so very large texts are counted but not remembered.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time divides the word count by 200 words per minute, an average for silent reading of plain text. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical pace for a presentation or a voice-over. Both are estimates: dense technical text reads slower, and a familiar script can be spoken faster.

How are words counted in Chinese or Japanese?

Chinese and Japanese do not separate words with spaces, so the counter treats every Chinese character and every kana character as one word, which is the common convention for these languages. Korean uses spaces and is counted like European languages. Mixed text is handled the same way, part by part.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, the counter needs no connection. You can switch off Wi-Fi and keep working. The counts, the reading time and the keyword list are all computed by the script already in the page, not by a server.
