Convert an M4A voice memo to MP3

Get a real MP3 from a supported M4A recording. Keep the original and check the downloaded sound before sharing it.

1. Save the recording as a file

Export or share the voice memo as a file before opening the converter. On iPhone, save the recording to Files so it is available in the browser’s file picker. Menu wording depends on the system version.

Check that the file ends in .m4a. M4A is a container, not a guarantee of an audio codec. This converter supports AAC, not lossless ALAC or protected audio. Renaming a different file does not convert it. Keep the original recording.

2. Choose a bitrate and convert

Select one M4A in the converter. The current limits are 400 MB and 30 minutes of audio. Supported AAC recordings have one or two channels at 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz. Processing stays on your device.

Start with 192 kbps. For speech, try 128 kbps when a smaller file matters; 320 kbps makes a larger file but does not restore missing detail. Press Convert to MP3 and leave the tab open. You can cancel. An unfinished job stops after ten minutes.

3. Download and check the result

Press Download MP3 after conversion finishes. Open the downloaded file in your audio player. Check that the start and end are present and that both channels sound as expected. Do not judge success by the filename alone.

The converter preserves mono or stereo but does not copy title tags, cover artwork or other metadata. MP3 adds lossy compression. Do not delete the source just because a download appeared; keep it for later editing or a different conversion.

If the recording does not convert

An unsupported codec is different from a large file. Try a current browser that can decode AAC; changing the bitrate does not make ALAC compatible. Damaged or protected recordings need an unprotected, readable source. If a large recording exhausts a phone’s memory, retry on a computer. This tool neither repairs recordings nor bypasses protection.

Before you share the MP3

  • Listen to the downloaded file, including its beginning and end.
  • Check that the recipient can open MP3 and that the file fits their size limit.
  • Keep the original M4A; use Clear only after saving the result.

No file is saved automatically. Closing or reloading the page discards the selected recording and the in-memory result.
