Other versions

Volume conversions are mostly about drinks, recipes and fuel: a recipe that wants a cup of milk or two tablespoons of oil, a fuel tank listed in gallons, a bottle of 750 mL that a label calls 25.4 fl oz, a pool in cubic meters. Type the amount, pick the units and the result appears as you type; the table lists the same volume in all fifteen units, so 250 mL shows as 1.057 US cups, 8.454 US fl oz and 0.44 UK pints together. US customary and UK imperial units are separate entries because a US gallon is 3.785 L and a UK gallon is 4.546 L. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use

  1. Type the amount, for example 250.
  2. Pick the unit you have and the unit you want, taking care to choose US or UK where both exist.
  3. Swap to convert the other way.
  4. Read tablespoons, cups or cubic meters in the table.

What it handles

  • Fifteen units: mL, cL, L, m³, cm³, US teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart and gallon, and UK fluid ounce, pint and gallon.
  • Exact factors: 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L, 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L, 1 cm³ = 1 mL.
  • The US cup is the customary cup of 236.59 mL; the FAQ covers the 240 mL and 250 mL cups.
  • A decimal comma works as well as a point, so 0,5 L and 0.5 L both convert.

FAQ

How many ml are in a cup?

It depends on the cup. The US customary cup used here is 236.59 mL, and a US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL. The US nutrition label cup is 240 mL, the metric cup used in Australia and many recipe books is 250 mL, and older UK recipes may mean a 284 mL cup. For a recipe, 240 or 250 mL is close enough unless it is a large batch.

Are US and UK fluid ounces the same?

No. A US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL and a UK (imperial) fluid ounce is 28.4131 mL, about 4% less. The pints differ more: a US pint is 16 US fl oz (473 mL), a UK pint is 20 UK fl oz (568 mL). Pick the unit from the country the recipe or label comes from.

How many liters are in a gallon?

A US gallon is 3.785 L and a UK gallon is 4.546 L. Fuel economy is the usual trap: 30 miles per US gallon is 12.75 km per liter, which is 7.84 L per 100 km, while 30 miles per UK gallon is 10.62 km per liter or 9.41 L per 100 km. Convert the gallon first, then the miles on the length page.

Is a milliliter the same as a cubic centimeter?

Yes, exactly: 1 mL = 1 cm³ and 1 L = 1000 cm³ = 0.001 m³. Both are listed so that you can pick the name used on your document, engine displacement being written in cm³ or cc, drinks in mL. Cubic meters are included for pools, tanks and concrete deliveries.

Does the converter handle weight units like grams?

No, because volume and weight are different quantities and the factor between them depends on the substance: 250 mL of water is 250 g, but 250 mL of flour is about 130 g and 250 mL of honey about 350 g. Use the weight page for grams and ounces, and a recipe’s own density notes for the step between them.
