A screen filled with #000000 and nothing else. It is the easiest way to see the dust and fingerprints you are about to wipe off, because a dark panel shows every mark that a bright desktop hides. It also puts a second monitor out of the way without switching it off, gives a projector something quiet to show between slides, and lets you check a panel for backlight bleed or a bright stuck pixel in a dark room. On an OLED phone or laptop, black pixels are switched off, so the display draws less power than any other color here.
How to use
- Open the page; the screen is already black.
- Press Go fullscreen so nothing but black is visible.
- Wipe the display, or leave it as a dark background. Press Esc to come back.
What it handles
- True #000000, not a very dark grey, so OLED pixels switch off completely.
- Brightness has no effect on black: the screen stays black at every level, which is what you want for a cleaning or bleed check.
- Switch to any other color with the presets or keys 1 to 0 without leaving the page.
FAQ
Why use a black screen to clean a monitor?
Dust, grease and dried spray sit on the glass, not in the image. Against black they scatter light and become obvious, while a white desktop hides them. Turn the screen black, switch the room light so it rakes across the surface, and wipe with a dry microfibre cloth before you reach for any liquid.
Does a black screen save battery?
On OLED and AMOLED displays yes, because each black pixel is simply off. The saving is real but modest at normal brightness and larger at high brightness. On an LCD the backlight stays on behind the black, so the power draw is almost the same as for any other picture.
How do I check for backlight bleed with it?
Make the room as dark as you can, put the black screen into full screen and look at the edges and corners from straight on. Uneven pale patches are backlight bleed; a narrow glow along one edge is common on LCD panels and is not a fault on its own.
