A screen filled with #00ff00, the brightest green a display can make. It is enough to test a chroma key setup before the cloth arrives: put a small object in front of a tablet, pull the key in your editor and see how the edges behave. Broadcast green is a calmer #00b140, and you can type that, or any other green, into the color field. On a monitor, a solid green field lights only the green subpixels, which is the quickest way to find a pixel that has failed on that channel alone.
How to use
- Open the page; the screen is already green.
- Type another green in the hex field, for example #00b140, if your workflow expects it.
- Press Go fullscreen and place the display behind the object you are filming. Press Esc to come back.
What it handles
- Pure #00ff00 by default, and any other green you type stays exactly as entered.
- Brightness lowers the green without shifting the hue, so a key set up at full brightness still matches.
- Useful as a subpixel test: on solid green a pixel with a broken green channel shows as a dark dot.
FAQ
Which green is the right chroma key green?
Television and film usually work around #00b140, sometimes called digi green, because it sits inside what a camera can record cleanly. Pure #00ff00 is brighter than most sensors handle and can spill onto the subject. Type the value your editor expects; both key well when the surface is lit evenly.
Can I film against a monitor as a green screen?
For a hand, a product or a small toy, yes. The panel is bright and even, which keys well. It is also a light source, so it wraps green light around the subject and reflects in glass and glossy plastic. For a person you need a real backdrop, lit separately from the subject.
Why is green used instead of blue?
Digital sensors devote more of their pixels to green than to red or blue, so a green key carries less noise and holds fine detail such as hair better. Green also sits further from most skin tones. Blue is still preferred when the subject wears green, or for scenes shot at night.
