A screen filled with #ffa500, the warm amber between red and yellow. Late in the evening it is a far easier colour to have in the room than a cold white one, and at low brightness it works like the amber lamp people use to wind down before sleep. Photographers use the same colour to fake late sunlight on a small subject, and it is a quick way to see whether a display can hold a warm tone without pushing it towards brown. Dim it, keep it in view, and it lights a desk without waking anyone.
How to use
- Open the page; the screen is already orange.
- Take the brightness down to 20 or 30 percent for evening use.
- Press Go fullscreen and turn on the clock if you want the time visible. Press Esc to come back.
What it handles
- Amber #ffa500 by default, with deeper shades such as #ff7f00 or #cc5500 available by hex.
- At low brightness the colour stays orange instead of turning brown, because all channels scale together.
- Works with the wake lock toggle, so the screen keeps glowing while it sits on a shelf.
FAQ
Is orange light better in the evening?
It is easier on the eyes in a dark room, and warm light late in the day disturbs the body clock less than bright blue-white light does. That is the idea behind night modes. Brightness counts for at least as much as colour, so turn the slider down as well.
Can I make sunset light with an orange screen?
For a small subject, close enough. Late sunlight is warm and comes from a low angle, so hold the display low and to one side rather than in front. A deeper #ff7f00 reads as sunset better than the default amber, and a lower brightness keeps highlights from blowing out.
Why does my orange look brown when I dim it?
Brown is simply dark orange: the hue is unchanged and only the brightness has dropped. That is what the slider does here, and it is how the colour behaves in the real world too. If you want a dim but vivid amber, lower the room light instead of the screen.
