A screen filled with #ffff00, the brightest colour on this page after white: red and green subpixels at full power with the blue ones off. That makes it a good warm fill light for a face on a video call, and a strong background for photographing a small object. It is also a useful check on a display, because yellow is where a blue cast shows up first: if your yellow looks greenish or milky, a night filter or a colour profile is still switched on. Dim it with the brightness slider when it is too much for the room.
How to use
- Open the page; the screen is already yellow.
- Pull the brightness down if the yellow is too strong, or type a softer shade such as #ffd700.
- Press Go fullscreen and use it as a light or a backdrop. Press Esc to come back.
What it handles
- Pure #ffff00: two subpixels at full power, which is brighter than any single primary.
- The clock overlay turns black on yellow, because black on this colour has far more contrast than white.
- A quick check for colour filters: a warm night mode makes this yellow look orange or muddy.
FAQ
Why does yellow look brighter than red or green?
Because two of the three subpixels are lit at once. Yellow is red plus green light, so it emits roughly as much as those two colours together, and your eye is most sensitive in exactly that part of the spectrum. Only white, which adds blue as well, looks brighter on the same panel.
Can I use a yellow screen as a warm light for video?
As a soft fill from the side, yes, and it warms up a face that looks grey under office lighting. It is not neutral, so your camera's white balance will shift if the screen fills the frame. Keep it off to one side, and lower the brightness until skin tones look natural.
Does a yellow screen help with eye strain?
A warm colour at low brightness is more comfortable in a dark room than a bright cold one, and that is what night modes rely on. It is not a treatment. Most screen fatigue comes from brightness that does not match the room, from glare, and from not blinking often enough.
